My Services

WRITING

I have  over three decades of experience writing for others, primarily as a medical and scientific writer specializing in materials targeting both professionals and lay persons. My areas of expertise include psychology, cultural studies, mythology/religion/spirituality, women’s health, nutrition, and integrative/functional medicine, but I am adept at researching any topic. My gift is to be able to explain complex topics in simple language no matter what the subject area. I am experienced in writing for low-literacy clients and am part of the Plain English Campaign.

In general I do most of my editing and writing online; however, I am available to work directly with clients in western Washington state (and farther afield if travel costs are provided).

References for my writing and editing work can be found at the bottom of the “Resume and References” page.

DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING

I work with professionals on journal articles and books, help college and graduate students improve their academic writing skills, and coach beginning writers. I am available for in-house seminars on writing skills for professionals.

I am a lifelong fan of novels and have been coaching aspiring fiction writers for two years. I review manuscripts for plot, character development, consistency,  and narrative arc. I provide guidance on balancing dialogue, exposition, and description as well as on how the book works as far as genre/intended audience. I also provide advice on particular areas where the author needs to brush up on their writing skills and pitfalls to avoid, such as authorial intrusion and misuse of adverbs. My goal is to not just make your book the best it can be, but to help you become a better writer.

I wrote my doctoral dissertation and a subsequent book on heroines in real life and literature. I am available for consultation on how to write a believable heroine.

I also offer developmental or “big picture” editing on other types of publications. I review the document for flow, gaps, and consistency and provide advice on how to tighten up or expand the work as needed. I am familiar with a variety of style guides, including Chicago, APA, MLA, PubMed, and CSE.

I am NOT a copyeditor. I fix problems with sentence structure and grammar but do not provide line edits. I will happily refer you to other editors who possess the unerring eye for tiny details like punctuation errors.

SPEAKING

I am available for interviews and public speaking on a variety of topics related to my book and to cultural mythology. See my CV for subjects I have spoken on to date and my blog on archetypal and mythological themes in movies and television for more lecture ideas.
